It will cost you R1.4 million to buy Mandela’s ID. Nearly 100 items linked to former statesman Mandela are set to be auctioned on Monday to provide funds for a memorial garden in the Eastern Cape.
According to the auction catalogue, the document is Mandela’s “first and only legitimate identification book in post-apartheid South Africa”. He received a smart ID card in 2015.
SOUTH AFRICANS ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT HIS DAUGHTER’S DECISION
South Africa is not happy about this.
After a two-year legal battle, Nelson Mandela’s eldest daughter, Makaziwe Mandela, plans to auction off the former president’s personal belongings next month.
The South African government had attempted to stop the sale, claiming the items were pieces of national heritage.
MANDELA’S DAUGHTER PLANS TO AUCTION ALL HIS PERSONAL BELONGINGS
The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria overturned an interdict sought by the SA Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA) against Makaziwe and his former prison warder Christo Brand.
The two reportedly planned to sell items through an international auction house, including Mandela’s prison key.
In court papers, the SAHRA said it learned of the planned sale of the items in December 2021 through a report in the British newspaper The Daily Mail.
