Musa Motha: Who is the South African dancer on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’?

Surviving cancer, appearing in a Drake music video, and receiving an offer from DJ Black Coffee: Facts about South African ‘BGT’ finalist Musa Motha.

South Africans are filled with pride following dancer Musa Motha’s emotional and awe-inspiring performance on Britain’s Got Talent (BGT).

The 27-year-old dancer made history as the first-ever contestant on the show to receive a group golden buzzer.

The audience gave him a standing ovation and couldn’t stop clapping, cheering, and chanting “golden buzzer” after Motha’s phenomenal contemporary piece.

On Monday, Motha advanced to the BGT finale, which will air on Sunday, June 4.

Here are some facts about this incredible dancer who has been making headlines and leading trend lists:

MUSA MOTHA IS FROM SEBOKENG

The BGT finalist hails from Sebokeng, a township in southern Gauteng, South Africa. He relocated to the UK in February last year.

HE IS A CANCER SURVIVOR

Musa Motha was diagnosed with a bone cancer called osteosarcoma in 2006. As a result, his leg had to be amputated when he was 10 years old.

“It was not easy for my family, but for me, it was not really that deep because I was still young and I didn’t understand what cancer was,” he told TimesLIVE.

A LOVER OF FOOTBALL AND DANCING

Football was Musa’s first love, and he was so talented that he qualified to join the Ajax development team when he was 10. However, around the same time, he suffered a knee injury that led to his cancer diagnosis.

After losing his left leg, the first thing Motha learned to do again was play football. Later, he fell in love with music and asked his friends to help him learn how to dance. Now a versatile dancer, he can perform contemporary, pantsula, isbhujwa, and ballet.

He has won awards at dance competitions across South Africa, including the Gauteng Matjeko Dance Festival, Dance Against All Odds, and the Red Bull Dance-Off.

HE TURNED DOWN BLACK COFFEE’S OFFER

Outside of dance and football, Motha is also a DJ. His DJing skills caught the attention of South African-born Grammy award-winning producer Black Coffee, who invited him to join his record company.

Although the offer was tempting, his mother wanted him to complete his high school education (matric) and tertiary studies first. Motha holds a diploma in chemical engineering.
