Parents, Are You Paying Trailers as School Transport? – Video

As concerns around learner safety continue to grow, alarming questions are being raised about the types of vehicles being used to transport children to and from school. In some communities, reports and images circulating on social media suggest that open trailers and unsafe vehicles are being used as makeshift school transport — a practice that has left many parents and road safety advocates deeply worried.
South Africa has already witnessed several tragic scholar transport accidents, many of which were linked to overcrowding, unroadworthy vehicles, and reckless driving. Against this backdrop, the idea that children could be transported in trailers — vehicles not designed to carry passengers — has sparked outrage and fear.
Road safety experts warn that trailers offer no protection in the event of sudden braking, sharp turns, or collisions. Unlike registered scholar transport vehicles, trailers have no seatbelts, no proper seating, and no safety regulations that protect young passengers. In the event of an accident, children travelling in trailers are at extreme risk of serious injury or death.
Authorities have repeatedly reminded parents that it is illegal to transport people in trailers not designed for passengers. Traffic laws require that learner transport vehicles meet strict roadworthiness standards, be licensed accordingly, and be driven by qualified drivers. Any deviation from these requirements places children’s lives in danger.
Some parents argue that financial pressure, lack of available transport, and long distances to schools leave them with limited options. However, officials stress that economic hardship cannot justify exposing children to life-threatening risks. They urge parents to report unsafe transport practices and to work together with schools, communities, and local authorities to find safer solutions.
As the country continues to mourn children lost in preventable road tragedies, one message is becoming clearer: no convenience or cost-saving measure is worth a child’s life. Parents are being called on to ask hard questions, demand safer transport, and refuse to compromise when it comes to their children’s safety.
The responsibility to protect learners does not rest on authorities alone — it begins with informed, vigilant parents who choose safety over silence.
