Residents of Alexandra were left stunned and deeply concerned after the City of Johannesburg ordered the immediate closure of Alex Metro Butchery following a disturbing inspection that uncovered serious violations of health, safety and animal welfare laws. The closure came after city inspectors found dogs inside the butchery, along with multiple breaches that posed a significant risk to public health, employee safety and food hygiene.

The shocking discovery was made during a High-Impact Service Delivery programme conducted in Region E on January 14. The programme, led by the City of Johannesburg, forms part of an ongoing effort to crack down on non-compliant businesses operating in densely populated and high-risk trading areas across the city.

According to city officials, inspectors entered Alexandra Metro Butchery as part of routine enforcement operations and quickly identified numerous violations that raised alarm bells. One of the most concerning findings was the presence of dogs inside the food-handling premises. Authorities immediately contacted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), which responded by removing the animals from the site.

The SPCA confirmed that the dogs were being kept on the premises without proper identification tags or valid veterinary certificates. This raised serious animal welfare concerns, as well as questions about hygiene standards in a business responsible for handling and selling food to the public. The animals were impounded to ensure their safety and wellbeing while investigations continue.

In addition to the animal welfare issues, inspectors uncovered a range of other serious violations that ultimately led to the issuance of a certificate of non-compliance and the immediate shutdown of the butchery. City officials said the severity and number of infractions left them with no option but to close the business to protect the public.

One of the major concerns highlighted during the inspection was non-compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Inspectors found that fire extinguishers on the premises had not been properly serviced, posing a serious fire risk. In the event of an emergency, both workers and customers could have been placed in grave danger due to the lack of functioning safety equipment.

“This is scary because we buy food from these places every day,” said one Alexandra resident. “If dogs are inside a butchery, what else is happening behind closed doors? We trust that the food we buy is safe.”

The City of Johannesburg stressed that businesses operating within the metro are required to adhere to strict health, safety and animal welfare regulations, regardless of size or location. Officials warned that failure to comply would result in swift enforcement action, including closures, fines and possible legal consequences.

The shutdown of Alex Metro Butchery is not an isolated incident. City officials revealed that similar large-scale inspections have been carried out in Alexandra and surrounding areas in recent months as part of a broader strategy to restore order and enforce compliance in busy business districts.
