Shell Seeks Public Assistance After Motorist Allegedly Leaves Without Paying for Fuel. Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal – Management at a Shell fuel station in Umzimkhulu has appealed to the public for assistance after a motorist allegedly filled up with fuel and drove off without making payment.
According to the station, the incident occurred during normal operating hours when a vehicle entered the Shell Umzimkhulu forecourt, refuelled, and then left the premises without settling the bill. Staff reportedly became aware of the incident shortly after the vehicle exited the station, prompting management to conduct an internal review.
A spokesperson for the garage described the alleged incident as unacceptable and unlawful, noting that fuel is a paid service and unpaid drive-offs negatively affect both the business and its employees.
“At this stage, we are appealing to the individual involved to come forward and resolve the matter responsibly,” the spokesperson said. “Our goal is not to shame anyone, but to ensure the outstanding amount is paid.”
The garage has not released details of the vehicle or driver, such as the make, model, or registration number. Management said this decision was made to give the motorist an opportunity to come forward voluntarily and to avoid unnecessary public speculation.
“We believe this matter can still be resolved amicably,” the spokesperson added. “The most important thing is that payment is made.”
The station has also urged community members who may have witnessed the incident or who have relevant information to assist by contacting the garage directly or reporting the matter to local authorities.
Management confirmed that if the individual does not come forward within a reasonable time, the incident may be formally reported to the police. Under South African law, leaving a fuel station without paying may constitute theft and could result in legal consequences.
Fuel theft remains a growing concern in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in smaller towns where fuel stations operate on tight margins. Industry representatives warn that even single incidents can have a significant financial impact on local businesses.
